The 1976 vineyard above Seneca Lake at 1487 Heritage, during harvest

October 2026 · Seneca Lake

Terroir Masterclass Vineyard Harvest

Walk the vines, read the land, learn the terroir, and discover the perfect moment to harvest.

Takes place at1487 Heritage5705 State Route 414, Hector, NY 14841Directions

The vineyard above Seneca Lake was planted in 1976. It is one of the oldest still in production in the Finger Lakes, and we bought the fruit from it for fourteen vintages before the land itself came to us in January 2026, after ten years of conversation. The terroir made that decision for us.

Sébastien walks you through it in the middle of harvest: the two soils, the slope, the wind, the second sun the lake throws back at the vines. You taste the grapes as you go, you learn to tell chardonnay from riesling by the leaf, and you find out how a winemaker decides that today is the day.

How the morning unfolds

  1. 01

    Arrival and welcome

You come up the drive past the engraved stone arch and the first block of chardonnay. A glass is in your hand under the porch before anything else begins, while the group gathers.

  2. 02

    A word in the barn

A short introduction inside the barn — the building has its own story, and it will have its own day.

  3. 03

    Into the vineyard

The history of the site, told standing in it: 1976, fourteen vintages of buying this fruit, ten years of talks, and the purchase in January 2026.

  4. 04

    Four to five stations

Each station has its own barrel, its own wine and its own bite, and its own theme. Soil is covered twice, top of the slope and bottom. Then the microclimate: the wind, the exposure, the light coming back off the lake, and one of the steepest grades in the Finger Lakes.

  5. 05

    Walking between them

You taste grapes along the way, at different stages of ripeness, and you learn how a winemaker tastes a berry.

  6. 06

    Block against block

The heart of the morning. Chardonnay against chardonnay, riesling against riesling, from neighbouring blocks. Side by side in the ground, and clearly apart in the glass. Terroir understood on the palate rather than explained.

  7. 07

    Back to the barn

One last station to talk it through, and a table holding every wine of the morning, lined up in order so you find them again easily.
