Corning, NY and the Finger Lakes Wine Country
Corning is about twenty minutes south of our gate. It is a small city built around glass: the industry that made it, and the museum that now draws people from across the world. When the weather turns, this is where we tell guests to go.
It is also the answer to a question we hear a lot: what do we do with the morning before the tastings start? Corning fills it properly. Two museums, a walkable old downtown, and a drive back north through the hills.
What is the Corning Museum of Glass?
The Corning Museum of Glass is at 1 Museum Way, Corning, NY 14830. It holds the world's largest collection of glass and runs live glassblowing demonstrations. Admission is $20 for adults and $17 for seniors 62 and over, and entry is free for anyone 17 and under.
The demonstrations are the reason to go rather than the collection, remarkable as it is. Watching someone gather molten glass and turn it into a shape in four minutes does something that a display case cannot. Children who arrive uninterested tend to leave arguing about how it was done.
It is open daily from 9 to 5, and until 7 from Memorial Day through Labor Day. From January through March it closes on Wednesdays. Hours and tickets are on the museum's own site, and worth checking, because the summer evenings are the quietest time to be in the building.
What else is worth seeing in Corning?
The Rockwell Museum sits in the Old City Hall beside Market Street and holds American art. It is open daily 9 to 5, with later summer hours, and is free for visitors 17 and under. A combination ticket covers both the Rockwell and the Corning Museum of Glass.
Around them is the Gaffer District, the historic downtown built along Market Street. A gaffer is the lead glassblower on a team. The name tells you what this place was. It is a few blocks of brick storefronts, restaurants and studios, and it is genuinely walkable, which is rarer around here than you would think.
If you buy the combination ticket, take the Rockwell first. It is the smaller of the two, and the glass museum will absorb whatever time you give it.

How does Corning fit with the wine country?
Corning sits south of the vineyards, roughly twenty minutes from Keuka Lake and about the same from Watkins Glen. Many visitors use it as a base and drive out to the lakes each day, or spend a wet morning in the museums and a clear afternoon on the water.

Where do we fit in?
We are Céline and Sébastien LeSeurre, and we make wine on the hills above Keuka Lake, about twenty minutes north of Corning. Sébastien is the sixth generation of a winemaking family from Champagne; Céline grew up in a family vineyard in the foothills of the Pyrenees. We planted our life here in 2012. Corning shows you what people here made with their hands for a century. We are doing the same thing on a hillside, slower.
A seated tasting takes about forty-five minutes and there is no hurry in it. Dogs are welcome, inside and on the terrace. Children have a tasting of their own that our daughters put together, which makes the drive up from Corning easier with a full car.
