Hammondsport sits at the very bottom of Keuka Lake, a small village wrapped around a green square with the water a short walk away. We make wine on the hills just above it, so we know it the way you know your own street. Here's how we'd spend a day there.
Most people arrive here for the wine and are surprised by the village. It's tiny — you can cross it on foot in ten minutes — but there's a real day to be had. A square with shade trees. A lake beach at the end of the street. A museum full of early flying machines. And, on the slopes around it, the wineries. Let's walk through it.

Hammondsport, NY sits at the south end of Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes. The main things to do are the village square with its shops and cafés, the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum of aviation, Keuka Lake State Park, the public beach and boat launch, and the wineries on the hills above the village.
The heart of the village is the square — a green block ringed by small storefronts, a few places to eat, and a slow pace that hasn't changed much in a long time. Start there with a coffee. From the square it's a couple of minutes down to the water, and everything else fans out from that point. We keep it simple with guests: the square, the lake, one thing to see, and an afternoon of wine on the slopes.
Hammondsport is also the natural base for the whole southern end of the lake. According to the Finger Lakes Wine Alliance, Keuka's Y shape and steep, lake-facing hillsides are what make this a wine region in the first place — and the village sits right where those hills meet the water. Everything is close. That's the charm of it.
What is the Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport?
The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport honors local aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss, an early rival of the Wright brothers who set speed records and built some of America's first aircraft here. It holds antique planes, motorcycles, and early engines, and is one of the village's main indoor attractions.
Here's a piece of Hammondsport most first-timers don't expect: this small lake village is a cradle of American flight. Glenn Curtiss grew up here, started out racing bicycles and motorcycles, and went on to build early airplanes on the shores of Keuka Lake. The museum named for him keeps that story alive with a hangar's worth of antique machines. It's a fine stop on a warm afternoon, and an easy one to fold into a wine day when you want an hour out of the sun.
Can you visit Keuka Lake State Park near Hammondsport?
Yes. Keuka Lake State Park sits on the western shore a short drive north of Hammondsport, near Bluff Point. It offers a swimming beach, a boat launch, picnic areas, and campsites right on the water, and it's one of the easiest ways to spend time on the lake itself during a Finger Lakes visit.
The lake is the whole reason the village exists, so give yourself time on the water. Down in Hammondsport there's a village beach and a boat launch at the foot of the square. A little way up the west side you reach Keuka Lake State Park, where you can swim, launch a kayak, spread out a picnic, or camp on the shore. Bring a swimsuit in summer. The water warms up nicely by July, and a swim between tastings is a good idea.

Where do the wineries fit into a day here?
The wineries sit on the hills that rise straight up from Hammondsport and run along both arms of Keuka Lake. Most are a short drive from the village square. A common plan is a morning in town and by the lake, then an unhurried afternoon of three or four tastings on the slopes above the water.
