Bath, New York: The County Town Behind the Lake
Most people meet Bath as an exit sign on the interstate and keep driving north to the lake. It is worth knowing what is there, partly because it is the practical town for anything you forgot to pack, and partly because it explains how this corner of New York is organised.
Where is Bath, New York?
Bath sits about twenty minutes south-west of Hammondsport, inland from the southern tip of Keuka Lake. It is the seat of Steuben County, which covers Hammondsport and our own vineyards, and it sits on the main east to west route through the region.
That position matters for visitors more than the town's size suggests. Bath is where the highway, the county services and the everyday shops are. The lake villages are small and seasonal; Bath is neither.
What is there to do?
It is a working county town rather than a destination. There are shops, services, groceries and places to eat that stay open outside the summer season, plus the county fairgrounds. Most visitors use it as a base or a supply stop rather than a day out.

Why it is useful to a visitor

How does it fit into a trip?
As the practical corner of it. Stay on the lake for the view and drive to Bath for anything you need. Or stay in Bath for the year round options and drive twenty minutes to the water each morning. Both work, and the second is cheaper.

How far is it from the winery?
About twenty minutes. We are on the east side of Keuka Lake at 13920 State Route 54, outside Hammondsport. Open daily from ten to six, and no appointment is needed for a standard tasting.
Céline and Sébastien LeSeurre are French winemakers who settled on this lake. Sébastien is the sixth generation of a winemaking family from Champagne. Our first harvest here was in 2012, after tasting grapes from more than two hundred vineyard sites across the region.
Why is Bath the county seat?
Because it was laid out to be one. The town was planned in the 1790s as the administrative centre for a very large tract of land, at a point where routes met. The county courts, records and services have run from there since, which is why it stayed a working town while the lake villages became seasonal.
Steuben County is one of the largest in New York by area, and most of it is farmland and forest rather than settlement. Bath sits near the middle of it. That geography explains the town's size relative to its surroundings: it serves a much wider area than its own population.
For a visitor the useful consequence is that Bath has infrastructure the lakeshore does not. Fuel, pharmacies, supermarkets, hardware, and places that open on a Tuesday in February.
What is the country between Bath and the lake like?
Farmland rising into wooded hills. The road from Bath climbs out of the valley, crosses open country, then drops toward Hammondsport and the water. It takes about twenty minutes and the last few of them are the ones people remember.
That climb matters for more than the view. The vineyards sit on the slopes above the lake rather than on this higher ground, because the water below moderates the temperature in a way the open farmland cannot. A few hundred feet of elevation and a mile of distance change what will grow.

Is Bath a good base in winter?
It is the practical choice. Much of the lakeshore closes between November and April, while Bath keeps its shops, food and lodging open through the year. Twenty minutes of driving buys you a functioning town in a season when the villages go quiet.
