Where to Stay Around Keuka Lake
We get asked this more than any other question, usually by email, usually two months before a visit. The honest answer has nothing to do with which property is nicest. It has to do with how far you want to drive at the end of an afternoon of tasting.
What are the options around Keuka Lake?
Three, broadly. Stay in a village such as Hammondsport or Penn Yan and walk to dinner. Stay on the shoreline in a rental with the water in front of you and drive everywhere. Or stay inland near Bath, where there is more choice year round and lower prices.
Each trades something. The villages give you walkable evenings and the least driving. The lakeshore gives you the view and the swim, and takes away the walk to dinner. Inland gives you availability and price, and adds twenty minutes each way.
Which is best for a wine trip?
A village, if you plan to taste. Hammondsport sits at the southern tip with restaurants within walking distance of most lodging, which removes the drive at the end of the day. That single fact matters more than any other feature.
The roads around the lake are narrow and unlit after dark. Being able to leave the car where it is, for one evening, is worth more than a lake view you will mostly see in daylight anyway.
Booking, in practice
- Summer and autumn weekends go months ahead. Weekdays open up late.
- Lakeshore rentals often run week long minimums in high season.
- Much of the lakeshore closes between November and April.
- Bath, twenty minutes inland, stays open year round and costs less.
What about camping?
It works well here and it is the cheapest way to be close to the water. Keuka Lake State Park has lakeside sites on the west branch, and private campgrounds fill in elsewhere. Nights are colder than the daytime suggests, in every season.

When should you book?
For a summer or autumn weekend, several months out. Those are the two seasons everyone wants, and the supply around a small lake is limited. Midweek in September is both easier to book and, in our opinion, the better visit.

Wherever you land around the lake, we are on the east shore outside Hammondsport. Open daily, ten to six.
Is Hammondsport a good place to stay?
It is the most walkable option on Keuka Lake, which matters if you plan to taste. Restaurants are within walking distance of most lodging in the village.
Are there hotels on Keuka Lake?
There is lodging in and around the villages at both ends of the lake, plus rentals along the shore. Options are limited by the size of the lake, so book early for summer and autumn.
Is it cheaper to stay inland?
Usually, and Bath is about twenty minutes from Hammondsport with more year round choice. You trade the walk to dinner for the price.
