Getting Onto Keuka Lake: Boats, Swimming and the Shore
We are a winery, not a marina, so this is written from the hillside looking down. But the question comes up every summer week, and the practical answer is not obvious from a map: most of this shoreline is private, and where you can actually reach the water matters more than what you want to do on it.
Can you rent a boat on Keuka Lake?
Yes. Several liveries and marinas around the lake rent pontoons and smaller craft by the day or half day, concentrated near Penn Yan at the northern end and Hammondsport at the southern tip. Booking ahead matters in July and August.
We do not rent boats and cannot vouch for any particular operator, so we will not name one. Check hours and rates directly, because they change through the season.
Where can you get to the water?
Public access is limited because the shoreline is largely private. Keuka Lake State Park on the west branch is the main public frontage, and the villages at each end have their own waterfronts. Everything between is mostly houses.
That is worth planning around. A lakeside rental gives you private access; a stay inland does not, and you will use the park or the village waterfronts. We cover the trade-off in our guide to staying around the lake.
What to know before a day on the water
- The water stays cold well into July. It is deep and it does not warm quickly.
- Wind builds down the long arms in the afternoon. Mornings are calmer.
- Public shore access is limited. The state park is the main one.
- Book rentals ahead in high summer, particularly for weekends.
Is the swimming good?
It is cold and clear. The lake is deep, so it warms late and cools early, and even in August the water has an edge to it. The state park and the village waterfronts are where most people swim.

How does a day on the water fit with the wineries?
Water first, wine after. Boating and swimming take the morning and the middle of the day; tasting rooms are better at the end of it. The distances around Keuka are short enough that both fit comfortably.
One caution that should not need saying but does: if you are on a boat, the driver is the driver, the same as on the road.
Above the west shore, ten minutes from the water. A good place to end a day that started on the lake.
Is Keuka Lake good for swimming?
The water is clear and cold. It warms late because the lake is deep, so even August swimming has an edge to it.

Do you rent boats?
No. We grow grapes on the slopes above the lake. Rentals are handled by marinas and liveries at both ends of the water.
